Friday 20th May 2016

Dear Parents,

Class 4 update on our Space Rocket Seeds

You may remember that we are carrying out a controlled experiment in our ‘Space laboratory’ (the staff room) to grow two groups of seeds – one packet from the International Space Station and one of normal seeds. We received a 100 seeds and 90% are growing well. We have no idea which are the space seeds. No signs of aliens yet!

Collective Worship

In our Collective Worship this week we have thought about our Christian value of ‘Love ‘in action both in our school community and in the wider world. We have looked at the work of Christian Aid in Bangladesh helping flood victims. The children have been very interested in how gifts of worms are helping to produce compost and enable the people to grow better food.

New Reception Children for September

They will make their first visit to Class 1 next Friday 27th May during the morning.

Year 6 Leaver’s Hoodies

For the first time last year Y6 parents organised Leaver’s hoodies with the children’s names on the reverse. Mrs Wright has kindly agreed to organise this for the current Y6. Please see the separate letter she has sent home with the children and complete the slip if you would like to be part of this so that she can get orders in place.

Year 2 Assessment

We are required to assess our Y2 children during the month of May and this is almost complete. It happens as a normal classroom activity with their own teacher and teaching assistant. We mark these in school and the outcome supports our own teacher assessment information which is reported in each child’s Annual Report. There are tests in Reading Comprehension and Maths and the children had already practised similar activities as part of their regular work in class.

Year 1 Phonics Screening

We are required to screen all our Y1 children in June on their knowledge of phonics (letter sounds). This happens as part of the children’s normal classroom activities and lessons with their own class teachers. They are scored out of 40 and this data is shared with you in their Annual Reports. If you would like any more information on their phonics learning or have any concerns please speak to Mrs Reynolds or Miss Jenkins. The teachers will be operating an open classroom drop-in after school on Wednesday 25th May till 4.30pm in Class 1 to answer any questions. Our teachers are always happy to see you at other times by arrangement.

School Group/Class Photographs

The proofs of the Group/Class photographs have been sent home. You can view large display proofs in the children’s entrance area. You should have received a sample of any group your child is in. If you would like to order any of these please return your form with payment to school by Monday 23rdMay. This will enable us to send the school order off before half term. Any orders after this date will have to be sent by you directly and will also incur a late order fee.

Instrumental Lessons in school

If your child is interested in starting instrumental lessons in school we have places available for flute, guitar, violin, piano and cello from September. Please speak to Mrs Dobson. If you wish to finish lessons please give half a terms notice in writing.
